Overview
Wayfound Rides is developed and operated by Benjamin Peter Davenport, an individual developer — "Wayfound" and "Wayfound Rides" are the names of this app/product, not a separate company. Wayfound ("we", "our", or "us") helps college students coordinate rides with people they already know: friends, housemates, teammates, club members, and fraternity brothers. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how it is used. By using Wayfound you agree to this policy. Wayfound is intended for college students 18 and older; see "Age & Eligibility" below.
Location Data
Wayfound collects your location, while the app is in use, to show nearby rides on the map. We do not collect your location in the background or while the app is closed. If a driver chooses to share their location during a ride, the latest coordinates and update time are sent to our database and shown through the group's ride features to people on that ride. These updates are associated with the ride. You can stop sharing from the ride screen at any time or turn off location permission in your device settings. We do not record a continuous route history.
Account Data
When you create an account we collect your email address (used for authentication and account recovery) and the username you choose. Joining a group requires an invite from someone already in it, or starting your own. If you sign in with Apple, we receive only the information Apple forwards, typically an anonymised email relay address. We do not receive your Apple ID password.
Ride, Schedule & Group Data
To match rides, we store the ride offers and requests you post (destination, date, time, notes), the class schedule you enter, the groups you belong to, an optional short description of your car (like "Black Civic") if you choose to add one so riders can find you, and a running credit balance (a non-monetary count of rides you've given vs. taken). This data is visible to the other members of your group, that's how the matching board works, but never to the general public or to members of a group you haven't joined.
School Rides
If you choose to see rides with everyone at your school, we email a one-time code to the school (.edu) address you enter and keep that address to confirm you are a student there. Other verified students at your school see your first name and the rides you post (where, when, open seats, and any gas money you offer to chip in). Your school email is never shown to anyone. Money is never handled in the app. You can take a post down at any time, and report or block anyone.
House
House (laundry, cleaning and chores) is shared only inside your group: members see who booked each laundry time, who has each cleaning job and chore, and what is done. Laundry and cleaning reminders are scheduled on your own phone.
Home Safe
If you tap "I'm home safe" after a ride, your driver and the safety buddy you choose (optional, set in Me) are notified, and other members of your group can see that check-in for 7 days.
Ride Suggestions & Thank-yous
To suggest rides together, other members of your group can be told when one of your classes over the next week starts or ends at about the same time and place as theirs (for example "you both finish near Old Main around 1:10 PM"), and when your last class of the day ends, with an approximate location. They never see your course names. You can turn this off at any time in Me, and you then stop appearing in other people's suggestions. Driving times you add are private: they're only used to decide whether a ride request should notify you. If location is allowed, the app can notice while it's open that you're in a campus building during a class period and offer to add that class; your location isn't stored or tracked in the background for this. After a ride, a rider can send their driver a positive-only thank-you; the driver sees a count of thank-yous received. To help groups run smoothly, Wayfound also records when someone cancels a ride within an hour of it leaving, or when a driver reports that a rider didn't show up. Only your group's admins can see these, only as counts for the last 30 days, and they are never shown to other members.
Messages & Shared Spots
Wayfound lets you chat with your group, with sub-groups you join, and with the people on a ride you're giving or taking, and lets you drop map "spots" (like a pickup spot or a door to use) for your group. We store the messages you send and the spots you add, along with who sent them and when, so the people in that chat or group can read them. Only members of the relevant group, sub-group, or ride can see them. You can delete your own messages and spots at any time, and you can report a message or spot, or block a user, from inside the app. We review reports and may remove content or accounts that break our rules. Messages are removed when the ride, sub-group, or account they belong to is deleted.
School Information
You can choose your school in the app to see its class times and campus map. That choice is saved to your account. If your school isn't listed yet, the name you type is saved so we know which schools to add.
Third-Party Services
Wayfound uses Supabase (supabase.com) for authentication, database storage, and account-linked usage events. Map tiles are served by OpenFreeMap (openfreemap.org). We use Sentry (sentry.io) for crash reports, performance measurements, and diagnostic logs to help us diagnose problems — this diagnostic data can include app and device details, actions taken within the app, and your account identifier. Session replay (screen recording) is disabled. We use Expo and Apple push-notification services to deliver notifications when you enable them. We do not sell your data or use any of these services for targeted advertising.
In-App Purchases
Wayfound is currently free to use. If paid features (such as premium group tools) are introduced in the future, they will be offered exclusively through Apple In-App Purchase. We do not collect or store payment information. Billing is handled by Apple and subject to Apple's privacy policy.
Data Retention
Your account, ride, schedule, and group data are retained for as long as your account is active. You can initiate account deletion directly in the app, from Me → Delete account. You may also request deletion or assistance by contacting us at the address below. Deletion is processed within 30 days.
Age & Eligibility
Wayfound is intended for use by college students 18 years of age or older and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly. Contact us at the address below if you believe this has happened.
Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction you may have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal data we hold about you. To exercise these rights, contact us at ben@davenport.com.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The updated date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of Wayfound after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
